0682103 Demon is cast out of boyMatthew 17:14-21 Mark 9:14-29, Luke 9:37-45, A.D. 28 Caesarea Philippi / Mt. Hermon

And it happened on the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, that a great multitude met him.  And coming to the disciples, he saw a great multitude around them, and scribes questioning them.  And immediately all the multitude, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and running to him greeted him.  And he asked the scribes, “What are you asking them?”  And behold, when they came to the multitude, a man from the crowd called out, came to him, kneeling down to him, and answered saying, “Lord, Teacher, I brought to you my son and I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.  And behold, have mercy on my son, for a spirit takes him, and wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, for he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.  He foams at the mouth, and grinds his teeth, and wastes away.  He suddenly cries out, and it convulses him so that he foams, and it hardly departs from him, bruising him severely.  He is epileptic, who has a mute spirit, and suffers grievously.  And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him.  I begged and asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able; they could not.”

And Jesus answered him and said, “Oh unbelieving, faithless and perverse generation!  How long will I be with you?  How long will I bear with you?  Bring your son here to me.”  And they brought him to him, and when he saw him while he was still coming, immediately the spirit convulsed him violently.  The demon threw him down and he fell on the ground, wallowing and foaming at the mouth.  And he asked his father, “How long has it been since this has come to him?”  And he said, “From childhood.  And often it has cast him both into the fire and into the water, to destroy him.  But if you can do anything, have compassion on us, and help us.”  And Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”  Immediately the father of the child cried out with tears, “I believe.  Help my unbelief!”  But when Jesus saw that a multitude came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to him, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him, and never enter him again!”

Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and having cried out, and convulsed greatly, the demon went out of him, and the boy was cured from that hour.  And the boy became like one dead; so much that most of them said, “He is dead.”  But Jesus took him by the hand and raised him up; and he arose and gave him back to his father.  And they were all astonished at the majesty of God.

And then when he had come into the house, his disciples came to Jesus, asked him privately, and said, “Why were we not able to cast it out?”  And he said to them, “Because of your unbelief.  For most certainly I say to you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.  But this kind does not go out and can come out by nothing, except by prayer and fasting.”

But while all were marveling at all the things which Jesus did, he said to his disciples, “Let these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man will be delivered up into the hands of men.”  But they did not understand this saying.  It was concealed from them, that they should not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
