1870673 Burial of Jesus – Matthew 27:57-61, Mark 15:42-47, Luke 23:50-56, John 19:38-42, Friday April 15 A.D. 29 Jerusalem
And it was the day of the Preparation, and the Sabbath was drawing near. And when evening had now come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath; behold, there came a rich man named Joseph from Arimathaea, a city of the Jews. He was a good and righteous man (he had not consented to their counsel and deed), and a prominent council member who also himself was Jesus’ disciple, looking and waiting for the Kingdom of God. And after these things, Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, boldly went in to Pilate, and asked that he might take away Jesus’ body. Pilate marveled if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead long. And when he found out from the centurion, then Pilate gave him permission. Pilate granted and commanded the body to be given up to Joseph.
And he came therefore and took away his body. And there also came Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds. So they took the body of Jesus. And Joseph bought a linen cloth, and taking the body down, wrapped him in the clean linen cloth, with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury. And now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb where no man had ever yet been laid. Then because of the Jews’ Preparation Day (for the tomb was near at hand) there they laid Jesus in his own new tomb, which he had cut out in the stone rock. He rolled a great stone against the door of the tomb, and departed.
And the women, who had come with him out of Galilee, followed after, and saw the tomb. And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, the mother of Joses, sitting opposite the tomb saw where he was and how his body was laid. And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. And on the Sabbath they rested according to the commandment.
