1430629 Jews question Jesus on taxes – Matthew 22:15-22, Mark 12:13-17, Luke 20:20-26,  April A.D. 29  Jerusalem

And then they sent some of the Pharisees and their disciples with the Herodians to him.  They went and took counsel how they might trap him with words in his talk.  And they watched him, and sent out spies, who pretended to be righteous, that they might trap him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the power and authority of the governor.  And when they had come, they asked him, saying, “Teacher, we know that you say and teach what is right and you are honest.  You do not defer to anyone; but truly teach the way of God in truth, no matter who you teach, for you are not partial to anyone.  Tell us therefore, what do you think?  Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?  Shall we give, or shall we not give?”

But Jesus perceived their wickedness and craftiness and knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, “Why do you test me, you hypocrites?  Show me the tax money.  Bring and show me a denarius, that I may see it.”  They brought to him a denarius.  And he said to them, “Whose is this image and inscription?”  They said to him, “Caesar’s.”  Then Jesus answered and said to them, “Then give therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.”

And when they heard it, they marveled greatly at him and at his answer, and were silent.  They were not able to trap him in his words before the people.  And they left him, and went away.
