1232604 The rich young ruler and reward   Matthew 19:16-30, Mark 10:17-31, Luke 18:18-30, A.D. 29  Perea

And as he was going out into the way, behold, a certain ruler came and ran to him and knelt before him, asked him and said, “Good teacher, what good thing shall I do, that I may inherit eternal life?”  And Jesus asked and said to him, “Why do you ask concerning that which is good?  Why do you call me good?  No one is good except one, God.  But if you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”  And he said to him, “Which ones?”  And Jesus said, You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder.’  ‘You shall not commit adultery.’  ‘You shall not steal.’  ‘You shall not offer false testimony.’  ‘Do not defraud.’  ‘Honor your father and your mother.’  And, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’”  The young man said to him, “Teacher, I have observed all these things from my youth up.  What do I still lack?”  And when Jesus heard these things, looking at him loved him, and he said to him, “You still lack one thing.  If you want to be perfect, go, sell all that you have, and give it to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me taking up the cross.”

But when the young man heard the saying, his face fell at that saying.  He went away and became very sad, for he was one who had great possessions and was very rich.  And Jesus seeing him, looked around, and said to his disciples, “How difficult it is for those who have riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!”  And the disciples were amazed at his words.  But Jesus answered again and said to them, “Children, how hard is it for those who trust in riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!  Most certainly I say to you, it is hard for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.  And again I say to you, it is easier for a camel to enter in through a needle’s eye, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.”

And when the disciples heard it, they were astonished exceedingly, saying to him, “Who then can be saved?”  And looking at them, Jesus said, “With men this is impossible, but not with God, for all things are possible with God.”  Then Peter answered and began to say to him, “Look and behold, we have left everything, and have followed you.  What then will we have?”  And Jesus said to them, “Most certainly I say to you that you who have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on the throne of his glory, you also will sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.  There is no one who has left houses, or wife, or brothers, or sisters, or father, or mother, or parents, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, for the sake of the Gospel, and for the Kingdom of God’s sake; but he who will not receive many times more in this time, will receive one hundred times more now in this time, houses, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and land, with persecutions; and in the age and world to come will inherit eternal life.  But many will be last who are first; and first who are last.”
