Now on the way, when Jesus went out with his disciples and came into the parts of the villages of Caesarea Philippi, it happened, that as he was praying alone, he asked his disciples who were with him, saying, “Who do men and the multitudes say that I, the Son of Man, am?” And they answered and told him, “Some say John the Baptist, but some others say Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, but others: that one of the old prophets is risen again.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ of God, the Son of the living God.” And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give to you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven; and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.” But then he warned them and commanded the disciples that they should say to no one about him that he was the Christ.
